Task 1b

Cubism

Cubism is an art movement that was evolved in 1907 by Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso, which was inspired by Paul Cézanne. Further into the history back in the early 1900’s, Kodak invented a camera called the brownie camera which affected artists who documented the present time because this invention would just capture the moment from a click of button. So this moment of time was then developed where artist had to advance their skills by discovering new elements. The first type was analytical cubism. This concept was revolving around multiple viewpoints and overlapping pieces to make a bigger image out of all the viewpoints; which gave this third-dimensional effect. This idea was different because it was overpowering realism with this abstract look.

This image is an analytical piece called ‘glass on a table’ by Georges Braque. All the pieces have been put together to create this circular table with a glass stood up and a pear beside the glass. This is by placing the glass piece on top of the rest to overlap and give this 3D effect. The colours are very much muted, representing the realism aspect of a brown table and a white opaque for the water. I think the pieces that are all overlapping makes this a typical cubist image which make up a bigger image.

Alternatively, synthetic is taking analytical a step further and creating an image out of different pieces of materials into a collage. For example, this image is a synthetic piece called ‘three musicians’ by Pablo Picasso. This is using different coloured pieces of materials to create an image rather than using different viewpoints and compiling them. The colour is very much muted which makes it a typical synthetic cubist image.

Futurism

Futurism was another art movement that evolved in 1909 that was focused upon new technology, movements and speed. The art would show a movement within the frame and have this blur/motion effect. It began by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti with his manifesto which stated that futurism is dynamic and that cubism was too motionless. Also this was during industrialisation so these were times where everything was changing and new creations have been evolved such as cars and telephones.

Furthermore, this image is an example of futurism. The art is called ‘a dog on a leash’ by Giacomo Balla. This is a typical futuristic image because you can see the movements in the frame with the dog’s legs and tail. Also the leach being blurry and repetitive looks as though it is swinging. The colours are very simple with the black but also very bold compared to cubism. This painting also represents speed because of the blurred elements making it look fast paced.

Here is another example of futuristic art. It is an image about a woman’s movements painted by Luigi Russolo. This painting is very interesting because you can see this movement from right to left. However the opacity seems very low which indicates the movements, and the shot in the centre is striking bold. The centre is the focal point which stands out the most, and the movements on the left side are going lower as though the woman is moving her head down or she’s walking off. The colours are very nice and vibrant and I think the image has meaning with a woman in control. This is connoted through the way the body language is composed.
